How does solar water heating work?

We attach solar panels to your roof and then connect them to a solar hot water cylinder, using a heat transfer system. The cylinder itself can be placed in an unobtrusive place such as an airing cupboard. The cylinder then stores the hot water that has been produced during the day by the sunlight, ready for use when you need it.

Where do the solar panels go?

A South facing roof ensures that the solar panels get the highest exposure to the sun. However, solar panels can be fitted to a south-east or south-west facing roof provided there is only a minimal of shading.

Of course, the roof will need to strong enough to support the solar panels - they are heavy items.
Also, a special hot water cylinder is needed to store the hot water. Ordinary storage cylinders can sometimes be converted. Howver, in some cases a new one will be required.

How hot will the water be?

On sunny days, the water will be anywhere from temperatures of 70 to 90 degrees celsius. Even on cloudy days in winter some hot water will be produced as the system utilises energy from diffuse light. In the winter months the system will pre heat the water in your cylinder, so the solar system will make meaningful reductions to your gas or oil consumption throughout the year.

Solar hot water systems are designed to store larger amounts of hot water than conventional systems, therefore you should have hot water left over from the previous day. Even if you have a few cloudy days in a row, the thermostat will turn the booster on to bring the water up to the correct temperature.

How long will the Solar Heating System last?

The life of the system should exceed 30 years.

the ease of installation
the type of existing system and how easy it is to convert

Do I need planning permission for solar panels?
